Part 1 — Parkour / Miguel
Transcript — Part 1 — Parkour / Miguel
Woman: Today, we have Miguel with us who is a young athlete in a very unusual sport – Parkour. Miguel, tell us a bit about this interesting sport. What is the aim of it? Miguel: Well, it’s a very new sport as it actually started in the 1980s. It was started in France and is also known as Freerunning. The athletes are aimed to move in whichever way they can over and through any area without using any equipment; only the ability of their body and in the fastest and most efficient way. Mostly it is running and jumping which obviously relies on strength and fitness. Woman: What is the main difficulty in this sport? Miguel: Well, I’d say self-control and to rely only on yourself. There is no room for being scared. The movements required work all parts of your body and the mind needs to control any worries about height or difficulties the athlete faces. Woman: What is true about Parkour in the UK? Miguel: Well, the UK has become the first country in the world to recognise it as a sport. So now it can get financial support from the government. This also means that it could soon be practised in schools as it is an exciting and interesting activity which can develop useful skills in schoolchildren. I think my school will be one of the first to include this kind of sport in the schedule. Woman: What do you think about a recent video about Parkour? Not everybody seems to like this sport. Miguel: Yes, mainly because some people do it in cities without the help of safety ropes so there is a danger to athletes as well as people nearby. This was not helped by the video which came out with a Parkour athlete running across Cambridge. Many people didn’t like him as he was filmed on ancient buildings, which they said was against the law and should be forbidden. Woman: Well, I hear you are going to take part in the Parkour competition on the Greek island of Santorini next month. Is it true? Miguel: Yes. It will be my first time. It’s an amazing location and a real challenge. The competition is very popular with athletes and can be watched on social media and on TV, which is great for the athletes as they become famous and get offered career opportunities. Woman: What are your plans for the future? Do you want to become a champion at Parkour or is it just a hobby? Miguel: I would like to finish my school first and maybe study sports at university. Regarding parkour I really enjoy it but I don’t think I would like to be a professional Parkour trainer. Woman: Thanks Miguel. I’m sure many young people will be inspired to start Parkour after this.
What are Parkour athletes expected to do?
use their body as well as equipment to move across an area.
use equipment efficiently to get from one point to another.
use only their body to move across a challenging area.
What do most athletes find hard to do, according to Miguel?
use every part of their body
control their fear
use equipment to jump from great heights
Miguel says that, in the UK, Parkour _____________.
has already been recognised as a sport.
has already been part of school sports.
is a well-paid sport to be involved in.
What does Miguel say about the competition in Santorini?

It will be quite easy for him to do well in it.
He could be offered a job because of it.
In the future Miguel wants to _____________.
study sports at university.
deal with Parkour as a job.
stop school to practise Parkour.

Speaker 1: What struck me most was just how arrogant the man is! I mean, he's a fine actor and I really like everything he's been in – that's why I bought the book. But that doesn't mean that his opinions on politics and the world really matter. He seems to think they do, and that because he's been in a few successful films, people should listen to his views on everything and take them seriously. Actually, he talks a lot of rubbish about all that and that really irritated me. I wanted to read about his early life and struggles, how he got to the top and all that, but he hardly mentions that, or anything about his private life. It's really put me off him. Speaker 2: I got the book because a friend recommended it, not because I was particularly interested in the man. In fact, from his public image on TV, I thought he was a ghastly person. Self-important, fiercely ambitious and not at all likeable is how he appears to me. So I was very surprised to find that he isn't actually like that at all, that's just for public consumption. In reality, he's a decent person who puts family and friendship first and he comes across as the sort of person you could have a pleasant chat with. He's certainly gone up in my estimation. Speaker 3: His family seem to have played a very important part in his career, and he talks about how much help they gave him in the early days, paying for coaches and taking him to tournaments all over the place. But he admits that after he made it to the top, he didn't treat them at all well. He talks about how much pressure he was under once he became a champion and how he struggled to deal with all the attention from the media and fans. We always saw him smiling in victory, but he says that he was really horrible to the people who were closest to him. It just shows that appearances can be deceptive. Speaker 4: Of course, people always say that comedians are actually very sad people but that doesn't seem to be the case here. With him it seems to be very much 'what you see is what you get'. The book's full of really funny stories, and he makes fun of everything, from some of the things that happened during his childhood to the big issues in the world today. He seems to have come from a very peculiar family and his descriptions of them are really amusing. You get the impression that there is no difference between his personality on stage and on screen and what he's like when he's not performing. Speaker 5: It's quite an uplifting story, really, a real 'rags to riches' one. Of course I knew all about his enormous success as a businessman, but I didn't know anything about his background. It certainly wasn't a privileged one, and he seems to have grown up in poverty with a family who didn't really care about him at all. The way he describes his childhood, it's hard to imagine how it could have been any worse. So the fact that he managed to go from that to such incredible success and wealth makes for a really interesting story. You don't get much of an idea of the real person, but the story is great.

Part 3 — Easy Life Cleaning Services
Transcript — Part 3 — Easy Life Cleaning Services
Jacinta: Hello, Easy Life Cleaning Services, Jacinta speaking. Client: Oh hello. I’m looking for a cleaning service for my apartment – do you do domestic cleaning? Jacinta: Sure. Client: Well, it’s just a one-bedroom flat. Do you have a basic cleaning package? Jacinta: Yes. For a one-bedroom flat we’re probably looking at about two hours for a clean. So we’d do a thorough clean of all surfaces in each room, and polish them where necessary. Does your apartment have carpets? Client: No, I don’t have any, but the floor would need cleaning. Jacinta: Of course – we’d do that in every room. And we’d do a thorough clean of the kitchen and bathroom. Client: OK. Jacinta: Then we have some additional services which you can request if you want – so for example, we can clean your oven for you every week. Client: Actually, I hardly ever use that, but can you do the fridge? Jacinta: Sure. Would you like that done every week? Client: Yes, definitely. And would ironing clothes be an additional service you can do? Jacinta: Yes, of course. Client: It wouldn’t be much, just my shirts for work that week. Jacinta: That’s fine. And we could also clean your microwave if you want. Client: No, I wipe that out pretty regularly so there’s no need for that. Jacinta: We also offer additional services that you might want a bit less often, say every month. So for example, if the inside of your windows need cleaning, we could do that. Client: Yes, that’d be good. I’m on the fifteenth floor, so the outside gets done regularly by specialists, but the inside does get a bit grubby. Jacinta: And we could arrange for your curtains to get cleaned if necessary. Client: No, they’re OK. But would you be able to do something about the balcony? It’s quite small and I don’t use it much, but it could do with a wash every month or so. Jacinta: Yes, we can get the pressure washer onto that. Jacinta: Now if you’re interested, we do offer some other possibilities to do with general maintenance. For example, if you have a problem with water and you need a plumber in a hurry, we can put you in touch with a reliable one who can come out straightaway. And the same thing if you need an electrician. Client: Right. That’s good to know. I’ve only just moved here so I don’t have any of those sorts of contacts. Jacinta: And I don’t know if this is of interest to you, but we also offer a special vacuum cleaning system which can improve the indoor air quality of your home by capturing up to 99% of all the dust in the air. So if you’re troubled by allergies, this can make a big difference. Client: Right. In fact, I don’t have that sort of problem, but I’ll bear it in mind. Now can you tell me a bit about your cleaning staff? Jacinta: Of course. So all our cleaners are very carefully selected. When they apply to us, they have to undergo a security check with the police to make sure they don’t have any sort of criminal background, and, of course, they have to provide references as well. Then if we think they might be suitable for the job, we give them training for it. That lasts for two weeks so it’s very thorough, and at the end of it, they have a test. If they pass that, we take them on, but we monitor them very carefully – we ask all our clients to complete a review of their performance after every visit and to email it to us. So we can pick up any problems straightaway and deal with them. Client: OK, well that all sounds good. And will I always have the same cleaner? Jacinta: Yes, we do our best to organise it that way, and we usually manage it.

Mark Charles: Capturing Extreme Weather
Mark Charles makes a living as a storm chaser and weather photographer. Throughout his professional life, he has captured images of all kinds of spectacular natural events, such as tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, and hurricanes. Many of his photographs have been featured in well-known scientific journals. Additionally, Mark has made successful appearances on American television documentaries to talk about intense weather, chasing storms, and climate change. He is known for being a dynamic and passionate speaker. He has written engaging articles regarding our shifting climate, hosts a highly popular blog about wild weather, and has published multiple books. But how did Mark’s journey actually begin?
Mark spent his childhood in Wisconsin, an American state where blizzards, ice storms, floods, and tornadoes happen frequently. At just six years old, he witnessed his first hurricane up close – a powerful memory that stayed with him forever. A few years later, his mother gifted him a camera. Interestingly, young Mark was initially more fascinated by recording the audio effects of nature than taking pictures. He would spend hours capturing outdoor sounds. Although it started as a boyhood hobby, it quickly sparked a deep fascination with severe weather. He kept diaries filled with observations and a few collected images. Through this, he figured out how different weather elements interacted and learned to predict when a thunderstorm or an ice storm might strike. Being a simple observer was enough to teach him a great deal about nature. As a teenager, he regularly read about extreme weather incidents in newspapers and visited the library to study specific scientific articles. He even joined an after-school club that took field trips to monitor weather patterns.
At university, Mark chose to study journalism instead of photography, starting his professional path as a writer for local newspapers. He excelled at his work and never felt any regret about pursuing journalism. However, he kept his childhood passion for storms alive. In his late twenties, he came across an advertisement for a storm-chasing tour in Tornado Alley. He decided to book the trip, bringing his camera along. Eventually, Mark's passion for photography overtook his writing career, transforming him into the visual artist he is today.
What does the author state about Mark’s photographs?

For questions 51–55, read the passage and choose the best answer (A, B, C, or D). (5 points)
The Reluctant Hero
The most charming quality of Aaron Green – among many – is his refusal to acknowledge the massive wave of stardom that is heading his way. "I can stroll down the street without being bothered, which is wonderful. I genuinely hope that won’t change, and I’m confident it won't," he states sincerely. He seems to truly believe that his profession will not alter his everyday life. “There is nothing extraordinary about my day-to-day life, and there is absolutely no reason why that should alter now.” You can’t help but wish him luck. It would be wonderful if this expectation proved correct, but realistically, it won’t, and deep down, he must be aware of that. Aaron has recently been chosen to play the lead role in an upcoming fantasy blockbuster set to premiere next year. The release of the first promotional image of him in costume last week triggered an absolute frenzy across the internet.
Following an award nomination for his previous role, Aaron is currently experiencing the most successful year of his career, yet he has kept his feet firmly on the ground. "It’s flattering when your work is recognized, but this is all uncharted territory for me," he remarks. "I truly love working in this field and discovering what I can do. No one can predict the future. We can fantasize about what lies ahead, but it’s quite pointless. I am simply enjoying my current projects and hope to do a good job moving forward, but that’s pretty much it. No major drama."
Out of all the personalities featured in his previous movie – which tells the true story of several college students who launch a highly influential blog – Aaron's character comes across as the most appealing. However, he maintains that the narrative is far more complex than it appears on the surface. "The brilliant thing about this movie is that every single character believes they are doing the right thing. I don't think anyone in the cast viewed themselves as playing the bad guy. It was merely a group of individuals who held contrasting perspectives."
It is a characteristically reflective response from the 27-year-old actor, who strikes one as a bit of an overthinker and prefers to avoid viewing his own performances on screen. He undoubtedly dislikes being interviewed as well, though he is so transparent and charming that a viewer would never guess it. He admitted to feeling "a heightened sense of accountability" when portraying a living person in his last film, despite having no direct interaction with the individual. "These are real people living their lives out there somewhere – naturally, that deeply impacts the caution and precision you bring to the role. I kept wondering if he would watch the movie, if he would see himself in my acting, or if he would be offended by it."
His portrayal carries an emotional fragility that can be quite intense to watch. Does he deliberately look for those specific roles, or do filmmakers spot that trait in him? "I’m not entirely sure; I assume it’s a mixture of both. I definitely possess a strong desire to cling to a sense of innocence – to preserve a childlike perspective on the world. I view it as a very prominent and deep theme in my own life, and from speaking to peers my age, I believe it’s a sentiment we all share."
In the first paragraph, the author implies that Aaron _____________.
maintains a practical and realistic view of stardom.
feels self-assured about managing the pressures of being famous.
seems completely oblivious to the fact that he is on the verge of massive fame.
holds impractical expectations regarding what a famous lifestyle entails.
The phrase "he has kept his feet firmly on the ground" suggests that Aaron is _____________.
humble and unpretentious about his recent success.
accustomed to being showered with public admiration.
skeptical about his chances of taking home an award.
unconvinced that he genuinely deserves so much public interest.
What does Aaron point out regarding his previous film?
The boundaries between the good guys and the bad guys are distinct.
The core storyline is less straightforward than people might assume.
He understands the exact reasons why audiences favored his character.
Frequent arguments occurred among the cast members during filming.
What does Aaron reveal about portraying a real-life individual?
He felt let down by the fact that he never got to meet the person.
He was convinced that the individual would avoid watching the movie altogether.
He worried that the person might easily take offense at his portrayal.
He felt relieved that the person gave their blessing for him to take the role.
What point does Aaron make in the final paragraph?
He restricts himself to acting roles that mirror his actual identity.
He prefers to let the director guide how a character should behave.
He is far more mature than people give him credit for.
He experiences certain emotions that are common among his generation.

The Evolution of Consumer Culture
In the contemporary globalized economy, consumer culture has undergone a seismic shift due to the meteoric rise of e-commerce. Traditional brick-and-mortar stores, once the undisputed pillars of retail, are increasingly forcing themselves to adapt or face obsolescence. Online platforms now offer unprecedented convenience, allowing consumers to browse millions of products at the click of a button. (61)_____________, this transition has fundamentally altered the psychological triggers behind our purchasing habits, often encouraging impulse buying.
Marketing strategies have likewise evolved, now heavily relying on sophisticated algorithms that analyze a user’s digital footprint. Social media influencers play a pivotal role in this ecosystem, subtly blurring the lines between genuine recommendations and sponsored advertisements. Many consumers frequently (62)_____________ prey to these targeted campaigns, purchasing items they neither need nor originally intended to buy. The psychological gratification of buying things has become instant, yet highly transient, leading to a continuous cycle of dissatisfaction.
Furthermore, this hyper-consumerism carries heavy environmental consequences that are routinely overlooked. The immense volume of packaging waste generated by home deliveries is contributing significantly to global pollution.
