Hello, and welcome to Focus on the Arts. I'm your host Dave Green. Today the focus is on The National Arts Centre, famous throughout the world as one of the major venues for classical music. The Centre is a huge complex: concert rooms, theatres, cinemas, art galleries and a wonderful public library, as well as three restaurants and a bookshop. The area was completely destroyed by bombs during the war in 1940. It was planned in the 60s, built in the 70s and eventually opened to the public in 1983. It is run by the City Council. The Centre is open 363 days of the year.

Transcript — SECTION A. LISTENING — Part II (TTS từ transcript)
Yvonne started yoga after a friend suggested it for back pain; after a few weeks her back felt better; she was amazed how much she enjoyed it. She was a school teacher, went part-time, then rented a room and gave up teaching. She has lowered her blood pressure. Don't rush meals; local food is healthier and less expensive; chocolate in moderation. Best advice: speak to people who have done yoga — more persuasive than an instructor.

SECTION C — Error correction
There are 10 mistakes. Write the wrong word and the correction. (5 points)
Let us suppose that you are in the position of a parent. Would you allow your children read any books without first checking their content? Would you take them to see any films without first finding whether they are suitable for them? If your answer of these questions is yes, then you are either extremely permissive, or just plain irresponsible. If your answer is not, then you are exercising your right as a parent to protect your children from what you consider to be desirable influences. In other words, by act as a censor yourself, you are admitting that there is a strong case for censorship. Children need protection and it is the parents' responsibility to provide it. However, what about adults? Aren't they old enough to decide that is good for them? The answer is that many adults are, but don't make the mistake of thinking that all adults are like yourself. Censorship is for the good of society as whole. Highly civilized people might find it possible to live together without laws of any kinds: they would just rely in good sense to solve their problems. However, imagine what chaos there would be if we live in a society without laws! Like the law, censorship contributes to the good.

Scientists are unsure as to why vitamins, so essential to health, can be toxic in high doses. The most likely explanation is that the body (6) ____ only equipped to deal with the levels found naturally in (7) ____ environment. If the intake is too far above the normal range, then the body's internal chemistry can be shunted out of alignment. (8) ____ this means is that the commercially sold vitamins and those provided by nature are not always compatible. The commercial forms may interfere (9) ____ the body's internal chemistry by 'crowding out' the (10) ____ natural and beneficial forms of nutrients.
SECTION D. READING — Cloze (crying)
Choose A, B, C or D. (5 points)
The ability to weep is a uniquely human form of emotional response. Some scientists have suggested that human tears are evidence of an aquatic past - but this does not seem very likely. We cry from the moment we enter this (1) _____, for a number of reasons. Helpless babies cry to inform their parents that they are ill, hungry or uncomfortable. SECTION D. READING — Noise pollution
Choose A, B, C or D. (5 points)
Although noise, commonly defined as unwanted sound, is a widely recognized form of pollution, it is very difficult to measure because the discomfort experienced by different individuals is highly subjective and, therefore, variable. Exposure to lower levels of noise may be slightly irritating, whereas exposure to higher levels may actually cause hearing loss. Particularly in congested urban areas, the noise produced as a by-product of our advancing technology causes physical and psychological harm but it also detracts from the quality of life for those exposed to it.
Unlike the eyes, which can be covered by the eyelids against strong light, the ear has no lid, and is, therefore, always open and vulnerable; noise penetrates without protection. Noise causes effects that the hearer cannot control and to which the body never becomes accustomed. Loud noises instinctively signal danger to any organism with a hearing mechanism, including human beings. In response, heartbeat and respiration accelerate, blood vessels constrict, functioning brought about the flow of adrenaline released in response to fear, and some of these responses persist even longer than the noise, occasionally as long as thirty minutes after the sound has ceased.
Because noise is unavoidable in a complex, industrial society, we are constantly responding in the same ways that we would respond to danger. Recently, researchers have concluded that noise and our response may be much more than an annoyance. It may be a serious threat to physical and psychological health and well-being, causing damage not only to the ear and brain but also to the heart and stomach. We have long known that hearing loss is America's number one nonfatal health problem, but now we are learning that some of us with heart disease and ulcers may be victims of noise as well. Investigations on human subjects have demonstrated that babies are affected by noise even before they are born. Fetuses exposed to noise tend to be overactive, they cry easily, and they are more sensitive to gastrointestinal problems after birth. In addition, the psychological effect of noise is very important. Nervousness, irritability, tension, and anxiety increase affect the quality of rest during sleep, and the efficiency of activities during working hours, as well as the way that we interact with one another.
Which of the following is the author's main point?

Loud noises signal danger.
Noise may pose a serious threat to our physical and psychological health.
The ear is not like the eye.
Why is noise difficult to measure?

It causes hearing loss.
It is unwanted.
People become accustomed to it.
People respond to loud noises in the same way that they respond to ______.

danger
damage
disease
Which of the following is closest in meaning to “accelerate” in the passage?
cease
rise
swell
increase
It can be inferred from this passage that the eye ______.
responds to fear
enjoys greater protection than the ear
increases functions
is damaged by noise
