PART C.I: Reading is fun cloze (41-50)

Choose A, B, C or D.

More and more people are discovering that sharing and talking about their favourite books with others can be as rewarding as the act of reading itself. For many people, book clubs help them in many ways. For people who feel that they are too busy to sit down and read, a book club can create a reading schedule. Others gain self-confidence by participating in or leading a discussion. Most members enjoy the chance to make new friends.
A successful book club should have a group small enough so that quiet people can be heard, but also big enough for many different backgrounds for more reading variety and livelier discussions. The best arrangement is a range of ages, sexes, and opinions. The club could specialise in one type of books such as mysteries, science fiction, or biographies, or members could read all types. Some clubs meet in bookstores, libraries, or restaurants, but most have meetings in members' homes because this offers more privacy and time for longer meetings. To make a meeting go smoothly, a leader should start the discussion by asking what the author's main idea was. Members should never be afraid to offer opinions, even if they do not like a book, but they need to explain why.

PART C.II: The rise of robots (51-60)

Read and choose the best answer.

As kids, our grandparents often talked about how difficult life was when they were growing up. They mentioned walking miles to school in snow, or doing hours of manual labour for little pay. Life has changed greatly, and it seems to get easier every year. With the help of robots, we might not have to do much at all. But is this a good thing?
By 2030, robotics is estimated to be a 10-billion-dollar business worldwide. Companies are already integrating robots into the workforce. Foxconn has plans to launch a factory staffed completely by robots. Briggo has invented a robot that serves gourmet coffee. At the push of a button, it crushes beans, measures water, and uses a steam wand for perfect cream. Unlike human baristas, it can serve multiple drinks at once and work all day without a break.
Robots are also entering homes. The Roomba vacuums rooms on a schedule. The Robomow cuts grass automatically. The Nanda Clocky alarm has wheels and moves randomly around the room, forcing users to get up and catch it.
Although these robots are basic, they will likely become more capable over time. Robots can remove tedious tasks, but many people still worry. Some fear people will decline if machines do everything. Others warn about robot rebellion: robots becoming so smart that they turn on humans. These concerns may sound far-fetched, but many questions remain before everyone accepts a robotic future.

How is Briggo's invention superior to human workers?

What happens if someone presses the snooze button on Nanda Clocky?

Which is NOT true about concerns over robotics?

The word "them" in paragraph 2 refers to ______.

The word "tedious" in paragraph 4 mostly means ______.

We can infer from the passage that ______.

PART C.III: Open cloze - pollution (61-70)

Fill each numbered blank with ONE suitable word.

There are many sources of pollution in our modern world. At present, the most severe sources are acid rain, car exhaust fumes and oil spills. Factory chimneys give off smoke that contains sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. These gases combine with moisture in the atmosphere to form acids. When it rains, these acids in the rain turn it acidic. Acid rain is thought to be the worst environmental problem of all. It has polluted aquatic life by turning many lakes into lifeless bodies of water. In some areas, there is no limestone in rocks to neutralize acid rain. One remedy is to pump limestone into acidic lakes. However, it is not possible to do this on a large enough scale to save all lakes. Car exhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide and lead, which are highly poisonous. In big cities, exhaust fumes build up and pose a health hazard to human beings. Sea pollution by oil threatens marine life. Much of this oil comes from ships cleaning fuel tanks at sea. Offshore oil wells also discharge vast amounts of oil. Sea pollution can also be caused by accidents involving oil tankers. An oil spill may occur as a result of such accidents.
