Postgraduates are about as easy to define as catching steam in a bucket. Courses can be vocational,
for training, as research, as a preparation for research, or a combination of these. Also, you can choose
between full-time and part-time. Increasingly, the approach to postgraduate study is becoming
modular. The vast majority of postgraduates are doing short, taught courses, many of which provide
specific vocational training. Indeed, there has been a 400% increase in postgraduate numbers in
Britain over the past 20 years. Current figures stand at just under 400,000.
People undertake postgraduate study for many reasons. These may be academic, intellectual
challenge, development of knowledge, vocational, training for a specific career goal, or only vague,
drifting into further study. It is essential that you determine the reasons you want to become a

postgraduate. If you have clear goals and reasons for studying, this will enhance your learning
experience and help you to remain focused and motivated throughout your course.
Where you study should be based on much more than the course you want to do. For some courses,
you are likely to be there for several years, and it is important that you are happy living there. Like
also, what type of accommodation is available, and whether the institution provides any housing
specifically for postgraduates.
Choosing an institution and department is a difficult process. To determine quality, do not rely on the
reputation of an institution, but find out what ratings are from the most recent assessment exercises.
Find out about the staff, their reputation, competence, enthusiasm and friendliness. Find out the
department if possible and talk to existing postgraduates about their experience, satisfaction,
comments and complaints. Most importantly, check how they feel about their supervisors.
Also, check what facilities are available, both at an institutional level, for example libraries,
laboratory and computing facilities, and in the department, for example study room, desk,
photocopying, secretarial support, etc. And then, the program will have their own priorities here. I’m
always anxious to check the computer support available, and regard it as slightly more important than
library access. Your working environment and the support available to you plays an essential part in
making your work as a postgraduate a positive experience.
Life as a postgraduate can be very different to your other experiences of education. Things that can
distinguish your experience at the level of study, independence of working, intensity of the course,
the demands on your time and often the fact that you are older than the majority of the students. These
factors can contribute to making you feel isolated. However, there are several ways you can make
sure that this is either short-lived or does not happen at all. Many student unions have postgraduate
societies that organize social events and may also provide representation for postgraduates to both
the student union and the institution. Students can also help to create a sense of identity in community
and often have discussion groups available. Don’t be afraid to talk to staff about any difficulties you
might be having. Of course universities provide counseling services, but we have found that the best
advice comes from talking to other postgraduates who may have faced similar difficulties.

Thank you for calling the Tourist Line. There are many different ways of getting round the city and
we’d like to suggest some you may not have thought of.
How about a city trip by boat? There are four main stopping points - from west to east: stop A Green
Banks, stop B City Bridge, stop C Roman Landing and stop D Newtown.
You can find the main booking office at stop A. The first boat leaves at 8 am and the last one at 6.30
pm. There are also many attractions you can visit along the river.
At Stop A: if you have time, you can visit the fine 16th century palace here built for the king with its
beautiful formal gardens. It’s very near the booking office. Now you can enjoy every corner of this
superb residence.
Stop B: Why don’t you visit Tower Restaurant with its wide range of refreshments? This is a place
where you can sit and enjoy the wonderful views over the old commercial and banking centre of
the city.
Stop C is the area where in the first century AD, invading soldiers crossed the river; this was much
shallower than it is now. That’s why this area is called Roman Landing. There’s an interactive
Museum to visit here with a large shop which has a good range of local history books.
At the furthest point of the trip, stop D, the most exciting place to visit is the new Entertainment
Complex with seven-screen cinema, bowling alley and video games arcade.

Find and correct 5 mistakes.

Any supermarket you walk into these days has got at least one aisle dedicating to organic
2 foods. We are seeing more and more ‘organic only’ supermarkets opening too. Is this
3 because the owners of these chains are determined to improve consumers’ choice and
4 protect them from the harmful effects of food additives? I decided to sample some meats,
5 dairy products and fruit and vegetables marketed as organic wholefoods. Therefore, after
6 some research, I discovered that none of the foods were grown locally. They also claim that
7 preserves are not used in their products - so, given that these same products are transported
8 over long distances before they reach their destination on the supermarket shelves, just how
9 ‘fresh’ are they? I’m not sure I really want to pay twice the price of regular supermarket
10 products and go the risk of getting food poisoning with the bargain.

IV. Reading obesity (66–75)

Choose A–D.

A MODERN HEALTH PROBLEM
There is growing concern about the way we view food, which goes beyond the “do we live to eat
or eat to live” debate. More and more children are leading inactive, sedentary lifestyles and are
suffering from obesity. In the 1990s, tobacco-related diseases were the problem, but aggressive anti-
smoking campaigns caused the focus of concern to shift. In the new millennium, obesity appears to
be the major health concern, and not only among children with far-reaching repercussions. Obese
children suffer taunts, jibes and bullying from their peers and this, instead of causing them to rethink
their eating habits, may perpetuate the vicious circle; in other words, these children turn to “comfort
eating” which adds to their weight problem.
Researchers have noted that some children are doing less than one or two minutes of “moderate
activity” in an hour, which is an alarmingly lower amount than that recorded in previous studies. The
problem seems to be worse in teenage girls than in teenage boys, with older children getting much
less exercise than younger ones.
Parents realize that their children are overweight, but do not know enough about nutrition to give
their offspring the support they need in order to help them change their lifestyles. Given time
pressures from work and family, more and more people rely on pre-cooked convenience foods or
quick fry-ups, thus exacerbating the problem.
There is some recognition of the problem, but it is not widely advertised. For example, there are
“Weight Loss Camps” aimed at obese children where, along with their slightly less overweight peers,
they learn to read food labels and understand the nutritional content of food, or lack of it, eat healthily
and do exercises. This experience can also restore their self-confidence, as they are surrounded by
youngsters with the same problem.
But by and large, it is not an issue which is taken very seriously. Schools are partly to blame for
the worsening of the problem, as they have marginalized physical education due to the pressures of

the national curriculum. Also, they have bowed to financial pressure and sold off playing fields, often
in order to buy more up-to-date computers, which in turn encourage sedentary lifestyles.
The food industry must also shoulder some of the responsibility, as their advertising campaigns
promote foodstuffs which are high in fat and sugar content. Such advertisements are often aimed at
children, and frequently feature such products as fizzy drinks, king-size chocolate bars and ever larger
packets of crisps. Such foods are attractive to families on low incomes because you now get more for
the same price as the original, smaller portion. However, children who have large bags of crisps or
bars of chocolate in their school lunch-boxes don’t save half for the next day; they eat the whole
thing. It would appear that fast food marketing people have seized upon children as being brand-
loyal from the cradle to the grave. They target small children with give-away toys, a worrying trend
which, some believe, warrants government action.
