Thanks for inviting me tonight. As you know, my main interest is in conservation and I'm lucky enough to work with lots of different organisations looking after animals both in captivity and in the wild.
I'd been fascinated by all kinds of bears for a long time before I started working in this field. But it was the spectacled bear that really attracted me – some people find it appealing because of its size and shape, and it's less well known than other types of bear, but for me I thought it was such a great name! It comes from the patches of yellowish fur around the bear's eyes which grow in a sort of circle shape, like glasses, although these golden markings vary greatly from one bear to another and may not be limited to the eyes – they can extend as far as the bear's cheeks or even chest.
I'd like to explain what we know about this bear, and why I find it so fascinating. It's the only survivor of a type of bear that once ranged across America during the last Ice Age. We thought that it was only found in certain places in Venezuela and Chile, but I was thrilled to read some reports that suggested it might also be living in northern parts of Argentina and eastern Panama.
It's quite difficult to find spectacled bears in the wild because they are quite shy animals, and tend to live in a wide variety of habitats, which can range from dry coastal deserts to high mountain areas above 4000 meters. They are most commonly found in forests, though. Being such timid animals they tend to come out at night, which is another thing that makes them difficult to see, though, like me, you may be surprised to learn that they don't sleep all through the winter as many other types of bear do.
We're not sure about the actual number of spectacled bears that remain in the wild, but it's been estimated that there are only about 2400 still around. The bears are endangered not so much because they are hunted by other animals, but what I find really sad is the fact that humans destroy their habitat. Spectacled bears are quite small compared with other bears, and of course they do have other enemies – these mostly include mountain lions and jaguars – but they remain a smaller threat.
The bears are primarily vegetarian, and their normal diet is tree bark and berries. On rare occasions though they eat honey, which I thought was just something in children's books. I was interested to find that they are incredibly good climbers, and one thing I found really funny is that they've been known to sit up a tree for days – they make a platform – why? – I couldn't guess, but they're waiting for fruit to ripen so they can eat it! It's quite surprising that although they rarely eat meat they have extremely strong jaws and wide, flat teeth. Very occasionally they do eat meat – something like birds or insects though they like small mice best if they can get them!
We're really trying to make people more aware of the bears, and we've made a television series about one man's efforts to make people understand the dangers facing the animals. He spent a long time in Peru studying them, and has published a very funny diary of his time there. I hope everyone will read it, and support our efforts to help these fascinating creatures!
So are there any questions?
All spectacled bears have identical golden markings around their eyes.
The spectacled bear is the last surviving member of a bear group that lived in America during the Ice Age.
Unlike many other bear species, spectacled bears usually spend the entire winter sleeping.
Spectacled bears are endangered mainly because they are frequently attacked by predators.
They wait in trees for several days until fruits become ripe enough to eat.

I was a small child when I left Vietnam and moved with my family to live in America. For me and my little brother, it didn't take long before we felt American, but for my parents and two older sisters, it was a different story. The biggest problem for my mother was the language. We were living in New York and although there were quite a lot of Vietnamese families near us they didn't work in the stores. This meant my mother had to take me with her when she went shopping and I was usually at school. For my father the most important thing when we arrived was to find a job. Luckily he had friends who knew us in Vietnam and they helped him get a job in a factory. It was hard for him to do that sort of work. In Saigon he had been a doctor. My two older sisters went to high school. They worked hard and did well and the school gave them extra English lessons. Even now, though, they speak with Vietnamese accents. My brother and I are lucky. We may look Vietnamese but we speak with American accents! My family found the way of life very different. In Vietnam my mother used to spend a lot of time visiting her sisters and brothers and looking after her mother and father. She feels quite lonely now. She says that in America you live inside your house but in Vietnam you take your house outside onto the street and share your life with everybody. I don't remember that but I do find the winters are quite hard to put up with in New York. It's very cold and snows a lot. My mother still wears traditional Vietnamese clothes at home and always cooks us rice and noodles. I must admit I prefer burgers and chips! Although my friends like to visit us I often feel a bit embarrassed by my parents' way of life. They do not understand Americans and I think I am more American than Vietnamese now. I suppose it is sad for them to have such a strange daughter.
When doing her shopping, why did the mother need her daughter’s assistance?
No Vietnamese people lived near her.
No Vietnamese clerks worked in the stores.
No one wanted to go shopping with her.
She needed someone to help carry her shopping bags.
Why did her father find it hard to work in a factory?
He wasn’t able to speak any English.
He had very few friends there.
He had enjoyed a much better job in Vietnam.
He couldn’t get along with American workers.
Why are the speaker and her brother more fortunate than their sisters?
They can get extra English lessons.
They may look more American.
They communicate with American accents.
They quickly make American friends.
What has the speaker forgotten about life in Vietnam?
Living close to other people
The warm weather
Wearing traditional costumes
Traditional cuisine
Why does she find inviting friends to her home embarrassing?
Her parents have very little money.
Her parents haven’t adopted American way of life yet.
Her parents force her to wear traditional Vietnamese clothes.
Her parents do not speak English fluently.

Presenter: Hello and welcome to the programme. Every year about a million people suffer from food poisoning in the UK, which would suggest that we need to be a bit more careful about what we eat. Our food expert, Dr Marilyn Shepherd, is here with us today to give us a few tips on food safety. Marilyn, what seems to be the biggest cause of food poisoning?
Marilyn: Well, Rob, it appears to be chicken. There's bacteria in raw chicken that causes more than a quarter of all the cases of food poisoning in the country, so you need to be really careful with it. Raw chicken should always be kept in the fridge, and you should make sure that it's covered and doesn't come into contact with any of the other food in there. After handling raw chicken, you should always wash your hands, knives and chopping boards with soap and hot water.
Presenter: Are there any precautions we should take when we're cooking chicken?
Marilyn: When you're cooking chicken, you need to make sure that it's done right through to the middle so as to kill all of the bacteria. When you cut into the thickest part of the chicken, there shouldn't be any pink meat, and the juices should be clear, not pink. If you want to be really sure that it's cooked properly, you could buy a meat thermometer. Chicken is supposed to reach 74ºC to be safe to eat.
Presenter: Thanks for that, Marilyn. So you're saying that chicken has to be cooked thoroughly. How about other meat? Some people like their beef rare, for example.
Marilyn: That's right, Rob, and rare beef is perfectly safe, as long as it's well-cooked on the outside to kill the surface bacteria. You see, pieces of beef have a very dense texture that bacteria can't go through, so it's not so important to cook it right through to the middle. You can also eat raw beef, like steak tartare, for example, but this is only safe to eat when the meat has been handled following strict food safety guidelines. As for other kinds of meat, they should all be cooked through to the middle.
Presenter: Let's talk about leftover food now, Marilyn. Is it safe to reheat it?
Marilyn: Yes, reheating food is fine, as long as you heat it to 74ºC all the way through to kill the bacteria. If you're using a microwave, you should mix the food halfway through to ensure that there aren't any cold spots that still have bacteria. And you have to be extra careful with rice. Rice has a bacteria which produces a toxin that is not destroyed by heat. Reheating the rice kills the bacteria, but it doesn't remove the toxin. To reduce the risk of food poisoning, put cooked rice in the fridge as soon as possible after cooking, and reheat it only once.
Presenter: That all makes perfect sense, Marilyn. Thank you for joining us.
Marilyn: My pleasure.

Artificial intelligence is becoming an (0) increasing -> increasingly important part of modern society. It is used in many sectors such as healthcare, education, finance, and transportation to improve efficiency and reduce human errors. In hospitals, AI systems can analyze patients' data more faster than human doctors, helping them to make accurate diagnosis and treatment decisions. In education, AI tools allow teachers to personalize learning materials based on each student's needs and abilities. However, the rapid development of AI also raise several concerns among experts. Many people believe that too much reliance on machines may result for a decline in human critical thinking skills. Others argue that governments should take action to ensure AI is used in a responsible way and its benefits are distributed more fairly across society. Despite these challenges, AI continues to transform the way people live and work around the world.

DIFFERENCES THAT DON'T DIVIDE Tristan and Hannah are as different as two people could be. Tristan loves football, but Hannah hates sports. Hannah loves technology. On the other hand, Tristan doesn't know the first thing about computers. He's from a large family with four brothers and sisters while she's an only child. Prior to meeting Tristan, Hannah was soft-spoken in groups. However, she's now far more outspoken than Tristan. The list of differences between them goes on and on. Yet, somehow, they've been married for fifteen years. With so little in common, how did they manage to make a connection and retain it for so long? Unlikely relationships like theirs are kind and curious. Most people assume that successful couples have more similarities than differences. That is the conventional wisdom: having a lot in common with a partner should make life easier. After all, interactions will produce less conflict and unhappiness if the partners share a similar point of view. However, research shows that this might not be the case. A Columbia University study found that some couples are just too much alike for their own good. Over three years, researchers studied 732 men and women and found that couples with the most similar personalities had the most of the weakest relationships. In surveys about levels of closeness, commitment, and overall happiness, those couples scored low. Clearly, having a lot in common is no guarantee of a successful marriage. Relationships between very different people have other advantages as well. In his study of couples, Robert Levenson of the University of California showed that different personalities could balance against each other and give couples different ways to see issues and cope with life's difficulties. For instance, someone with an outgoing nature can make up for a partner's shyness. In turn, the outgoing partner can learn to enjoy more time alone. The causes of attraction between very different people may go even deeper. A study at Rutgers University revealed a physiological reason for attraction between some opposites. In the study, Dr. Helen Fisher reviewed research on the subject of attraction and learned that levels of certain hormones are linked with specific personality characteristics. Individuals with high levels of testosterone tend to be competitive and analytical. They are often attracted to - and attract - their opposites, who are introspective and nurturing individuals with high levels of the hormone estrogen. On the other hand, people with more curious or flexible personality types tend to be attracted to people like themselves. In addition, people who are less anxious and more social are attracted to others of the same personality type. These two groups tend to have average levels of testosterone and estrogen. Ultimately, it seems that opposites do attract among certain personality types, but not all. Genetics may also explain why opposites sometimes attract. A University of New Mexico study suggests that our genes strongly influence our choice of partners. The study found that a woman's unhappiness in a relationship is linked to her partner's genes being too closely matched to her own. This preference may have developed to avoid the dangers that come with inbreeding, which can cause harmful mutations and decreased overall health. In addition, researchers at the Université Paris Diderot compile evidence that people use smell to sense whether a partner is a match. The study suggests that people can sense differences in MHC (a part of our DNA that plays an essential role in protecting the body from disease) and are more attracted to those whose MHC composition differs from their own. Differing MHC compositions give partners a genetic advantage when having children since their offspring will benefit from a diversified gene pool that can protect them from various diseases. As with everything in life, there's no approach to finding love. Like Tristan and Hannah, people with very different upbringings, personalities, and interests can have long-lasting relationships. Their characters, not to mention their hormones and diversified gene pool, may even benefit them in the long run. But in the end, all of this research doesn't really offer much advice for people looking for a perfect match. So don't search exclusively for partners whom you perceive as similar to or different from yourself. Leave your options open and allow yourself to be surprised by what you find.
According to paragraph 1, what is true about Tristan?
He dislikes sports.
He is an only child.
He's soft-spoken in groups.
He's been married for years.
According to paragraph 3, what did the study at Columbia University find?
Couples with different personalities can balance against each other.
Couples with different personalities can cope with life's problems better.
Couples with similar personalities are more likely to have weak relationships.
Couples with similar personalities are more likely to have successful marriages.
According to paragraph 4, what is NOT true about attraction?
Individuals with high levels of hormones are likely to be attracted to their opposite.
Analytical individuals tend to be attracted to competitive personality types.
Individuals with average levels of hormones are likely to be attracted to each other.
Individuals who are curious or flexible tend to be more attracted to people with average hormone levels.
According to paragraph 5, how does genetics affect attraction?
People are attracted to individuals who have similar MHC compositions.
Pairing individuals with differing genes is likely to cause harmful mutations.
Couples with similar gene pools are more likely to be unhappy.
People are less attracted to individuals who are unhealthy.
According to paragraph 5, why have women evolved to prefer partners who are genetically different?
To minimize the chances of health problems in their children
To increase the possibility of success in their relationships
To avoid partners who are too competitive and analytical
To select partners who have higher levels of testosterone
In paragraph 5, what can be inferred about genes?
They determine whether someone has MHC or not.
They should be tested before two people have children.
They cause different diseases in men and women.
They can affect how a person smells.
III. READING COMPREHENSION — Part 4
You are going to read an interview in which four teenagers talk about their part-time jobs. For questions 68-75, choose from the sections (A-D). The sections may be chosen more than once. Write your answers in the provided answer box.
PART-TIME JOBS
A. FINN Well, unlike a lot of people of my age, I like my part-time job. I work in a gym, but the only thing I'm not really keen on is doing the 6am shifts. It's so hard to get out of bed then, especially when it's cold and wet outside. We have a rota, so we don't get the early shift all the time. The best thing is I get on with the other guys there. We've become pretty close over the past year and hang out when we're not there. However, I must admit, it's not exactly the kind of thing I'd want to be doing when I leave school. I want to get into something more corporate such as going into business like my parents.
B. GIOVANNI I'm a dog walker. I gave up my last job at a restaurant because it was so stressful and tiring. We weren't even allowed to take a break at busy times. My new working place is just around the corner, so I don't even have to take the bus. I can just walk in. Then there's the fact that I don't have the boss constantly telling me what to do. Obviously as long as a good walk is offered, I can choose the route and time, which is a fascinating thing. Even when I have a lot of schoolwork, it's just fine to take an hour off and get outside. Mum and Dad have their own business and are away a lot. I keep asking them to get a dog of our own. They reckon their lives are too busy right now, but I think they don't want to get up early before work to take it out.
C. LAUREN My job is acceptable. To be honest, I didn't go out looking for one. I'm perfectly happy to rely on the bank of Mum and Dad! I'm not exactly in a rush to work a nine-to-five job. My parents have their own company, and they need a hand with the gardening jobs because it is expanding, so I agree to it for a short time. The stuff I do is outside the city mainly, so a lot of the time is spent going to and from places with Dad, which can be time-consuming. Mum mainly does the accounts and bookings in an office at the end of our garden. It's challenging because I don't want my schoolwork to suffer. It hasn't yet, but it's always at the back of my mind. And actually, my parents have such a good work ethic. They've always paid their way, even as teens, so I guess I ought to take their example.
D. TARA Having a part-time job has been a big wake-up call for me. Before I worked at weekends, I would lie in until midday surfing the internet or just sleeping. Looking back, I realize it was such a waste of time. Now, I'm working at the bakery. It's a bit monotonous and the wages really could be better. On the other hand, the cakes and bread that they give away at the end of the day are so worth it. My parents would rather I focused on schoolwork but that's probably because my grandparents didn't let them have a job until they finished university. I'm not planning on that and being in the kitchen every weekend is just a great way to learn things for when I go to catering college. The other people there are mainly full-time. They're nice, but I wouldn't say they're people I'd make plans with in my free time.
Which teenager is working for the family business?
Which teenager is not content with the earnings they receive?
Which teenager has parents who didn't work in their teens?
Which teenager is gaining work experience for their future career?
Which teenager finds it hard to get up early for work?
Which teenager doesn't have to travel far from home to work?
Which teenager is anxious about balancing work and studies?
Which teenager enjoys good company at work?
